How do you…??? (giveaway!)

I might have gone a little crazy with the color changes on my LightWaves shawl, and ended up with this:

Melody had lots of ends to weave in, too, and she just up and skipped that step, the brilliant creature:

If bowties aren’t your thing, or the end-bits make you want to throw things, check out this great article, Weaving in Your Ends, over at The Purl Bee. I’m feeling pretty enlightened, and also pretty inspired to start sharing all the things we’ve learned, as a collective group of knitters here at Frabjous Fibers, on techniques and tricks to make knitting more fun, productive, and awesome-looking. Also, we have lots of questions and hang-ups of our own, and what better way to find the answers than to do some research and present our findings. To YOU!

Enter, Tutorial Tuesdays! with the gang here at Frabjous Fibers. As-Close-to-Every-Tuesday-as-Possible, we’ll be sharing tips, techniques, and tricks on our new YouTube channel. Possibly studio shenanigans.

To get this ball rolling, we want to know what you have questions about. What do you need help with? What’s a German short row? What is Carson’s favorite color? Who is he, anyway? We can answer these questions, and more.

Throw some questions our way in the comments on this post, and we’ll enter you into a giveaway drawing for one of our new colorways on yarn or fiber (your choice!). Give us some fuel for our informative-yet-entertaining fire! Yow!

A winner will be drawn on Sunday night!

xoxo

ETA: Let’s extend this a few more days, so we can get some more comments in! We won’t be starting Tutorial Tuesdays! until after TNNA, so we have a little extra time. 🙂

  1. How do you boldly use art yarns in ordinary patterns? They are usually a limited supply and often not suited for a main part of a garment anyway, but I choke up when trying to figure out how to incorporate them into a larger project. And there are only so many scarves, hats, etc. you can make with them.

  2. I second Celeste’s question, and would like to add a request for recommendations about adding stripes or color accents in a pattern which doesn’t specifically call for any, perhaps to use up leftovers from other projects of one of those mini skeins which seem to be everywhere.

Also, how do you tell how much yarn you will use in a project? For example, if I have 440 yards of yarn, and I cast on 30 stitches, and my gauge is X stitches by Y rows over 4 inches, how long can I expect my scarf to be?

  3. I’D like to learn more about spinning. I’m a kind of new spinner using a wheel. How do you divide your fiber so that you have relatively the same amount on your bobbins to ply them together. I’ve been spinning it all onto one bobbin, winding it into a cake and try to ply using the inside and outside ends of the yarn. It does not work well. I’d love to learn more about plying!

    1. Hi Jamie! You won our giveaway. Please get in touch by email us at infoATfrabjousfibersDOTcom
Thank you for submitting a query. We’ll definitely be doing some fun spinning videos, so stay tuned. I’ll address your question of plying soon! – shannon

  4. How do you know if you have enough yarn to finish a row on a shawl if you are changing colors each row?
also, how do you decide which colors you want when there’s such an awesome selection 😛
